CHAPTER SIXTEEN

ChaosRider: Who’s this new guy?]

[IceQueen: I’m checking … I can’t find a matching feed!]

[ShadowDancer: Order them alphabetically! I’ll check A–C, you check D–F, and so on.]

[DarkCynic: Got him! His name is Deathhands. Doesn’t look like the type you want to mess with.]

[LunarEclipse: Oh … Yeah, Jason, you’re going to want to be careful here!]

I blink as I watch the scrolling chat, then turn my attention to the newcomer. Or at least I try to. The cat that suddenly hits me in the head and digs its claws into my shoulders makes it a good bit more difficult, and I flail around as I try to get the thing off.

Whoooooooooosh!

A blast of necrotic energy erupts from Deathhands’s staff, hitting Columbus at point-blank range. The cowboy is blasted backward into a nearby wall. He draws a pistol and fires into the dark lord’s face, but the weapon remains just as useless as when he shot me.

“Stupid … cat!” I stab the creature with my Photonic Dagger several times, then run forward and smash my head into a wall. The cat cushions the blow to my skull, and it drops to the ground rather senseless. I quickly turn the weapon into a sword and cut off its head, then spin back to the newcomer. He fires a blast of damage at me, but I duck under it and charge forward at him.

“Oh no, you don’t!” He laughs and lifts a hand. I feel invisible cords wrap around my wrists and feet, and I’m lifted into the air and cast to the side like a puppet. As I come down, I land right in the middle of a small gang of the cats. They jump on me with lightning speed, and I react in the only way that comes to my mind.

I grab their tails, hold on tightly, and spin with all my might. They lose their grip on my skin and are slung around rather like … well, like anything you might spin by the tail. I throw them at the newcomer, then charge at him. He blasts them out of the sky with two quick bolts of lightning, killing them both instantly, and holds out his staff. I freeze solid—not from cold but from simple paralysis, and he cackles.

“You’re useless, Jason! All you can do is watch as I—hrrrrrrrk!”

Now, the word hrrrrrrrk, when translated from lizard speech—I picked up a book on it from Ali—means something akin to the English word “hello,” though it also has the connotation “I’m keeping an eye on you.” Lizardmen aren’t, by nature, trusting creatures. That said, in this case, the word

hrrrrrrrk is the sound of Deathhands choking on a lasso that suddenly wraps around his neck. Columbus emerges from the darkness, lasso in his hands, and gives a sharp jerk of his wrist. The man is slammed into the ground so hard that I hear his back pop, and I run forward to snatch up his staff.

“Ah-ha!” I dive forward and grab the weapon, then spin and point the crystal at him.
